so, some people that have known me a long time know that i have, in the past, had some reservations when it comes to works of fiction involving vampires. there’s always been somewhat of a corny-ness factor to all of it. i have/had friends who used to play this extraordinarily dorky “live-action” rpg dealing w/ vampires when i was a teenager and i HAAAATED it. a) it took their time away from me :P b) the “live-action” aspect of it was ridiculous and c) there were/are just too many people that begin to think they ARE a vampire because of that kinda stuff…which is the biggest cheese-factor of them all. i was a goth when i was younger, so that kinda sentiment of “it would be so cool to be a vampire” permeated much of that sub-culture.

it started w/ the series moonlight. i was looking for as many new shows to watch as i could and it kinda fell under the umbrella of “science fiction.” i watched the first episode and thought it was rubbish. the shining light of the show was the star alex o’loughlin. very nice. i kept watching and got all into the camp. of course, it was canceled. ironically enough, one of the networks heads said that she thought people were watching more for mr. o’loughlin than anything else.

then, last summer i heard about true blood. i watched when september 2008 arrived and adored it. i used allowing myself to watch a new episode as incentive for finishing my homework last semester. this show, thankfully, is devoid of cheese for the most part, it ain’t rated “tv-ma” for nothin’. plus i was already a fan of anna paquin. now i have to wait all the way until this november to watch the 2nd season. (>_<)

while true blood was having it’s first season, i heard of this movie coming out called twilight. i wanted to see it, but it’s hard to get myself to the theater for anything that doesn’t have star wars in the title. i knew it was coming out on dvd soon, but didn’t have time for it to arrive via netflix by mar. 21. i thought “well, i’ll just get it from netflix next week (meaning this week) to watch the extras and rent the movie from amazon. i’m not sure why i became so fixated this weekend w/ seeing that movie.
watched it saturday evening and liked it pretty well. there was definitely some cheese present (i.e. “you’re my own personal brand of heroin” ugh), but i could deal w/ it. i felt like it seemed kinda rushed, though. i didn’t have a good grasp on bella…was she supposed to be an outcast/weirdo? and some other things. the relationship between edward and bella just seemed to progress too quickly. i figure the book that the movie was based on was most likely much more detailed and an overall better account of what happened. i got it yesterday and have had a difficult time putting it down!
i started feeling fairly immature @ being so into it. after all, the fanbase for this stuff is lacking in age and i am not. it’s all romance-y w/ hip young words sprinkled throughout (the movie, not the book). i do feel better now, though. my brother’s girlfriend says she’s all into it too. she’s my age, plus she’s working on a PhD. so i’m not alone! i’ll just have to make sure to never step foot @ a twilight event. ever.
